Geneva’s Portrait of a Graduate

We have a clear vision of what we would like our graduates not just to know, but to be. The Portrait of a Graduate outlines the qualities we endeavor, through the grace of God, to instill.

The Qualities We Endeavor to Instill

Successful graduates will possess…

Eight qualities, worked out over thirteen years, that we endeavor through the grace of God to instill in every Geneva graduate.

An understanding of the gospel, a growing faith in their Lord Jesus Christ, a deepening union with God the Father, and an increasing reliance upon the Holy Spirit.

This understanding will be manifested in their holding Scripture as the inerrant foundation of all knowledge and truth, in having a foundational knowledge of the Old and New Testaments, in discerning between traditional orthodox Christian doctrines and mere form or heresy, in rightly ordering their affections (hating every kind of evil, and clinging to all that is good), and in the desire “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

A commitment to living as a Christian

This commitment will be manifested by being part of the local body of Christ, by doing the good works which He has prepared beforehand (Eph. 2:10), by loving and honoring parents; by submitting to God, church, and all biblical authorities, by applying Christ’s kingship to all areas of life; and by humbly acting for the good of others.

A habit of sound reasoning stemming from an integrated Christian worldview and deep study

This habit will be demonstrated by a readiness to listen carefully with discernment, to interpret meaning from oral and written works of others, to follow the consequences of ideas, and to discern truth, beauty, and goodness wherever found. It is seen in an understanding of the principles of various scientific disciplines and a familiarity with the Great Books of Western Civilization.

The faculty to speak and write with wisdom and eloquence

This faculty will be manifested by a command of language, by long experience in oratory and debate, by practice in adjusting for purpose and audience, by the integration of heart and intellect, and by learning to communicate with clarity, beauty, and persuasion.

The readiness to perform at high academic levels

This readiness will be shown in the ability to excel in rigorous college programs, whether secular or Christian.

A Christian Aesthetic: an appreciation for enduring beauty

This aesthetic will be manifested in a graduate’s subjective pleasure in objective beauty, whether in visual form, music, or words. It will be shown when God’s creation, and beautiful works of men, awaken wonder and worship in the graduate.

The ability to graciously lead in their spheres of influence

This ability will be shown by the exercise of social graces, good citizenship and appropriate patriotism, a rigorous work ethic, a love for neighbors, attentiveness to the needs of others, and a desire to serve Christ the King in the home, church, marketplace, and community.

A confidence in God’s design for their lives

This confidence will be manifested in the conviction that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female in His image, equal in value and dignity, yet called to different, complementary callings in marriage and the church, strengthened by the knowledge that for all those who love God, all things work together for good (Rom 8:28).
