About Geneva Academy

Embracing Classical Education and Christian Values

Get to know who we are.

The mission of Geneva Academy is to assist Christian families train up well-educated, godly children. As a classical Christian school, we do this by integrating faith and reason, by cultivating virtuous character, and by developing all of a child’s faculties. We have a clear vision of what we would like our graduates not just to know, but to be.

Geneva Academy was launched in 2007 by five families committed to bringing about a reformation in Christian education in Douglas County. These families selected a classical Christian model of education, the approach best able to integrate intellectual and spiritual development into a thoroughly Christian worldview. Originally started under the name Prayer Rock Academy, the school located to rural Umpqua, Oregon in 2008. The school grew from fewer than a dozen to 46 students, K-8 at the end of the 2011-12 school year. That autumn, the Board decided to relocate the school to Roseburg under the name Geneva
Academy.

The name Geneva Academy has Important historical connections. The city of Geneva, Switzerland was in many ways the heart of the Protestant Reformation. People came from all over Europe to study and translate the Scriptures, to develop a Biblical approach to family, church, education, government, culture, art, and economics. They often returned to their home countries and continued the great movement there. John Knox’s training in Geneva, for example, enabled him to bring about the Reformation and independence of Scotland.

The courageous Christians committed to making early America a light to the world and a “city on a hill” brought with them Geneva Bibles, and laid the foundations of a Christian commonwealth. Our heritage as American Christians owes much to the effect Geneva had on all of western Christendom.

The name Geneva Academy brings forward this rich heritage. It speaks to our desire to train a new generation of students: children who will be wise and mature Christians who bring about spiritual and cultural reformation in their own families, churches, and communities.

Popular in 16 th century Geneva was the Latin phrase Post Tenebras Lux meaning “After darkness, light.” The saying on our logo, Post Tenebras Lux Christi makes it unambiguous that we are championing the light of our Savior, Jesus Christ, “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9).

Education at Geneva Academy is defined as inherently different — DISTINCTIVE — than public education in philosophy and content. Geneva Academy endeavors to function as an extension of the family.  At all its levels, programs and teachings, Geneva Academy seeks to:

  • Teach all subjects as parts of an integrated whole with the Scripture at the center.
    (2 Timothy 3: 16-17)
  • Provide a clear model of Biblical Christian life through its staff and board.
    (Matthew 22:37-40)
  • Encourage every child to begin and develop his relationship with God the Father
    through Jesus Christ.
    (Matthew 28:18-20)
  • Emphasize grammar, logic, and rhetoric in all subjects.
  • Encourage every student to develop a love for learning and to achieve his academic
    potential.
  • Provide an orderly atmosphere conducive to the attaining of these goals.

Geneva Academy is a non-affiliated Christian school.  Though we rent space from two different churches, Geneva is not affiliated with any particular church or denomination and is governed by our own Board of Directors, Statement of Faith, and Policies.
