Hermits, Rise Up!

Worshiping Jesus together may be the single most important thing we do. It plays an indispensable role in rekindling our spiritual fire, and keeping it burning. Corporate worship brings together God’s word, prayer, and fellowship, and so makes for the greatest means of God’s ongoing grace in the Christian life.” DesiringGod.org Editor, David Mathis writes on  5 Benefits of Worshiping with Others: awakening, assurance, advance (growth), accepting another’s leading and accentuated joy.

Here’s a bit of 1847 wisdom from Pastor James Alexander, writing about family worship. This should be looked at especially by those who are trying to “be a good Christian” but are going it alone and are not in regular fellowship:

“From the moment when we first repeat the Lord’s Prayer, saying “Our Father,” we are taught that our religion is social. It not only influences others, but it is exercised and enjoyed in common with others. What a monstrous thing it would be, for a man to spend a lifetime in the midst of fellow beings, without ever feeling or acting towards them in a religious capacity! We can scarcely conceive of true light as so hidden under a bushel. Solitary experience like this, would be worse than monkery, for that is social; worse than the seclusion of the anchoret*, for that is removed from witnesses. Where the Spirit of God really operates on a soul, He brings it into fellowship with other renewed souls, and renders it a centre of radiance to all around.” *(an anchoret is a religious recluse, like a hermit)
