Dr. Yun is passionate about classical Christian education because it teaches students to think and challenges parents to follow their biblical mandate to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of Christ.
Dr. Linda Sewell, Co-Chair
Dr. Linda Sewell is a permanent member of the Geneva Academy board. She joined the board in 2013, and is currently the chair. Her daughter, Maggie, has been a student at Geneva since the first K-5 class started, and is currently in 10th grade. Dr. Sewell attended college in Fullerton California, where she earned a degree in Biology with an emphasis in cell biology and microbiology as well as a minor in biochemistry. She then attended medical school in Wisconsin and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Ohio. She currently is in private practice in Roseburg, and loves caring for the women in this area. She especially loves the privilege of delivering their children.
Her emphasis on the board is serving on the building committee, with the goal of a new campus that will give our children a safe, beautiful site to continue their learning. Dr. Sewell is passionate about Christian education because she feels strongly that God must be the center of any education, and is especially passionate about classical Christian education because it teaches our children the skills needed to become lifelong learners donned with the armor of the Lord.
Mr. Shane Hatcher
Mr. Shane Hatcher is a native Oregonian and grew up right here in Douglas County. Mr. Hatcher spent his childhood years being educated in the public school system then attended UCC, where he studied Industrial Mechanics and Machining. He is now employed in the semiconductor industry as a Tool & Die Specialist and has been in that field for almost thirty years. He married Darlene in 1993 and they have one child, Rachel who was one of Geneva’s inaugural graduates in 2016. He is a founding Board member of Geneva Academy and was involved at its inception. He has been assisting Mr. Brian Turner in doing family interviews for the school and did so with Mrs. Seiker in the school’s early days. He fabricated some whiteboards, grade school tables and various needed school supplies in Geneva’s early days as well. Mr. Hatcher has put up and taken down many banners and signs over the years and has assisted Dr. Yun in the 3-gun fundraisers and has assisted in the Reformation Day celebrations in some years past.
He has seen the value of classical and Christian education and believes in the importance of training up children in God’s word and God’s truth to combat the tide of societal ideals such as socialism, communism, anti-intellectualism and a hatred for the one true God. R.J. Rushdoony summarizes it well, “To control the future requires the control of education and of the child. Hence, for Christians to tolerate statist education, or to allow their children to be trained thereby, means to renounce power in society, to renounce their children, and to deny Christ’s Lordship over all of life.”
Mr. David Forgard
Mr. Forgard was born and raised in a Christian home in Salem, Oregon, and graduated from Oregon State University with an electrical engineering degree. He met his wife, Susan, at Oregon State where they both graduated in 1975, and were married later that same year. They moved to Roseburg in 1977 where Mr. Forgard began his career at Sims Electric, Inc. and continues to work there as President and co-owner. At an early age, God placed a passion for worship in Mr. Forgard’s heart. Through the years, God has impressed upon him the truth that Christians have been created and redeemed by God to worship Him forever, and that our purpose is to “Glorify God and enjoy Him Forever.” In His providence, God placed Mr. Forgard as a worship leader to minister at North Roseburg Evangelical Free Church for over 37 years. He also served as an elder at NREFC for many of those years.
Mr. Forgard has been a firm supporter of Geneva Academy since its founding and has followed the life and growth of the school throughout its history. In 2015, God changed the direction of his church ministry, and subsequently, led him to become more directly involved with Geneva as a board member. He is excited about and committed to becoming more directly involved with Geneva as a board member. Mr. Forgard is committed to Geneva’s mission and vision statements which emphasize the importance of training godly children to influence their community and the world for Christ. He believes that Geneva Academy, with its classical Christian model, is a unique and excellent means to supplement parents’ responsibility to “train up” their children “in the way they should go” so that “when they are old they will not depart from it.” Mr. Forgard and his wife have two godly adult married children and eight adorable grandchildren.
