Medieval Reliquary, Made by the Fifth Grade Art Class and Geneva Headmaster, Brian Turner

Throughout the Middle Ages, the church in the East and in the West collected relics.  Relics could be things holy people had touched or worn, or even parts of their bodies.  Most believed relics were saturated with grace and imparted God’s blessing on the owner or viewer.  An example of a relic could be a piece of “the true cross” or a thorn from Christ’s crown.  Such a precious object needed a worthy container, and reliquaries were made for that purpose.  They were constructed with expensive metals and were adorned with engravings, gems, ivory, and/or gold.  Reliquaries became a distinct art form.  Our reliquary is made of wood and covered with sheets of repousse aluminum, each with a Biblical or Christian symbol.  Our reliquary is not for the veneration of relics…but to decorate a home and perhaps hold collections.
